Lake Techirghiol

A hypersaline lake with therapeutic mud — Romania's most famous natural spa.

Lake Techirghiol
What it feels like

You walk down to the lake, scoop a handful of black mud, smear it on your arms and legs, and stand in the sun until it cracks. Then you wade into the lake to rinse off — and float. The salinity is so high you can read a book lying on your back. The mud smells like sulphur, the lake smells like the sea, and the whole thing has been a Romanian summer ritual for four generations.

Lake Techirghiol is a closed hypersaline basin — saltier than the Black Sea — that has been used for therapeutic mud baths since at least the 19th century. The mud (sapropel) is a black, sulfur-rich deposit formed by the slow decomposition of microorganisms in the salty water; it is internationally recognized for treating rheumatic and skin conditions. The Techirghiol Sanatorium, founded in 1899, is one of the oldest balneological institutions in Europe still in operation. The southern shore (toward Eforie Sud) is the public area: free beaches, mud zones where visitors coat themselves and dry in the sun, and a long lakeside promenade. The lake also hosts substantial bird populations — flamingos, pelicans, and several heron species — making it a quiet spot for birdwatching outside the bathing zones. The Techirghiol Monastery, on the lake's northern shore, adds a contemplative stop with a small church and gardens.

Best time to visit

June through September for full bathing. The water is warmest in July–August. Out of season the lake is quiet and good for walking and birdwatching.

How to get there

Lake Techirghiol is between Eforie Nord and Eforie Sud, 15 km south of Constanța. Easy by tram, bus, or car along the coast road. Resorts of Techirghiol and Eforie Sud both have direct lake access.

Giddo's tips

The mud is on the lake bottom in shallow areas — wade in carefully and dig with your hand. Don't apply mud to broken skin. Rinse thoroughly. The Eforie Sud public mud beaches have outdoor showers.

Good to know

High salinity is harsh on cuts, eyes, and electronics. Wear water shoes — the lake bottom can be uneven. Don't swim if you have serious cardiovascular issues without consulting a doctor.
