Maramureș Wooden Churches: A 3-Day UNESCO Loop
Eight UNESCO-listed wooden churches across the valleys of Iza and Mara
A relaxed three-day loop from Sighetu Marmației through Bârsana, Ieud and Surdești — the most accessible part of the Maramureș wooden church heritage.
The wooden churches of Maramureș were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1999. Eight of them — narrow, tall, almost gothic in their proportions — are scattered across the Iza and Mara valleys in northern Romania.
This three-day loop covers the most accessible four, with comfortable village stops between. The Iza Valley is greener and a touch slower than the Mara; bring an appetite, because guesthouses here still cook with what their grandparents grew.
The route, stop by stop
Start in the old border town. Visit the Memorial of the Victims of Communism — set in the former communist prison — and the open-air Maramureș Village Museum.
A modern wooden monastery complex built in the 1990s in traditional Maramureș style. Tall steeples, hand-carved gates, riverside silence. Great first stop in the Iza valley.
One of the oldest wooden churches in Maramureș, dating to the 17th century. UNESCO listed. The interior frescoes are dim but well-preserved.
For a long time considered the tallest wooden church in the world (~72m steeple). UNESCO listed. The village around it is quiet and worth a short walk.
A small village with its own UNESCO wooden church (Cuvioasa Paraschiva). End the loop here before heading back to Sighet — a good place for a final country lunch.
