Bukovina Painted Monasteries: A 3-Day Loop
Voroneț, Sucevița, Moldovița, Humor — four UNESCO frescoes in three days
Loop from Suceava through the four most famous painted monasteries of Bukovina, with quiet forest roads between each stop.
The painted monasteries of Bukovina hold their frescoes on the outside — a 15th and 16th-century rarity that survived five Carpathian winters per year.
This three-day loop bases you in Suceava or Gura Humorului and visits the four most-photographed ones: Voroneț (the blue), Sucevița (the most complete), Moldovița (the Siege of Constantinople) and Humor (the smallest). Forest drives between monasteries are part of the experience.
The route, stop by stop
Start point. Old Moldavian capital. Visit the Princely Fortress (Cetatea de Scaun) and the Church of St John the New — itself UNESCO listed.
The famous one. Built 1488. The western wall holds the Last Judgment in the deep blue that bears the monastery's name — Voroneț Blue.
Built late 16th century, fortified by walls. The frescoes here are the most complete of the UNESCO group. Spend extra time on the Ladder of Virtues.
Famous for the southern wall — the Siege of Constantinople, painted not long after the actual event was still fresh in collective memory.
The smallest of the four. Founded 1530 by Petru Rareș's chancellor. The intimate scale makes the frescoes feel almost personal.
