Black Sea Coast & Danube Delta: A 3-Day Run
From Constanța to Sulina, with Histria and Tulcea on the way
A three-day drive from Constanța to the edge of the Danube Delta — beach mornings, Greek ruins at Histria, slow river afternoons.
The Romanian Black Sea coast is short — about 245 km — but it changes character every 30 km. The southern half is full-on resort, the northern half is half-empty marshland leading into the Danube Delta, one of the largest wetlands in Europe and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
This three-day route catches both. Constanța for the Roman mosaic and the Casino. Histria for the Greek ruins (founded 657 BC, oldest city on Romanian soil). Tulcea for the gateway to the delta. Sulina for the slowest sunset on the country's easternmost mile.
The route, stop by stop
Start at the old port. The Roman Edifice with Mosaic, the Casino on the seafront (currently under restoration), and the Mahmudiye Mosque. Fish lunch by the harbor.
The biggest resort on the Romanian coast. Long beach, lake on the other side. A short stop is enough if you're not staying — the strip is best at sunrise.
The oldest city ever founded on Romanian soil — a Greek colony from 657 BC. Open-air archaeological site with the small museum at the entrance.
Gateway to the Danube Delta. Spend the late afternoon arranging a boat for the next day. The fish market by the river is the right pre-dinner walk.
Reachable only by boat. Old free-port town on the easternmost arm of the Danube. The lighthouse, the multi-faith cemetery, and the slowest sunset in Romania.
