Wesselényi Castle in Jibou
An 18th-century Baroque castle surrounded by Romania's largest botanical garden.

Wesselényi Castle in Jibou is an 18th-century Baroque castle built by the Hungarian Wesselényi family — one of the oldest noble houses in northwestern Transylvania. Not huge, not Peleș — but sobering elegance, and surrounded by something rare and valuable: Romania's largest botanical garden.

The "Vasile Fati" Botanical Garden has 25 hectares with over 5,000 species — tropical greenhouses, medicinal plants, alpine plants, Japanese, Mediterranean, a water-lily lake, an arboretum. More than a park, a small embassy of world biodiversity. Come in late spring or September for the widest variety.

The castle itself has modest interiors (partly administrative space now), but the facade, courtyard fountain, and walk to the botanical garden make the visit worthwhile.

Tip: castle + garden = 2-3 hours. Cheap combined ticket (about €2-3). Good local restaurant in Jibou. 40 km from Zalău, 50 km from Cluj-Napoca. Sălaj is rural and quiet — good for an unhurried weekend.
