Voroneț Monastery

The "Sistine Chapel of the East" — the painted monasteries of Bukovina.

Religious Ticket required
Voroneț Monastery exterior frescoes in vivid blue, Bukovina, Romania
What it feels like

Standing before that blue, in silence, is the closest thing to time travel Romania offers. Cool air, the smell of beeswax, the faint chant of evening prayer from inside.

The famous "Voroneț blue" pigment, made from lapis lazuli, has never been chemically replicated. The frescoes depict the Last Judgment in vivid detail, with biblical scenes wrapping the entire exterior. A working monastery, with nuns still in residence.

Best time to visit

May through October. Morning light brings out the blue best.

How to get there

By car: 35 km from Suceava. By train + taxi: Gura Humorului station, then 5 km. Combine with Sucevița and Moldovița monasteries for a full painted-monasteries day.
