Turda Salt Mine

Turda Salt Mine is a salt mine turned into a sci-fi underground museum. You descend 13 levels by lift or stairs (368 steps), cross medieval galleries, and arrive in the Rudolf Mine — an 80 m deep cavern with a Ferris wheel, billiard tables, bowling, a theater, an underground lake with rowboats. All down there, 120 m below ground.

Salt has been extracted here since at least the 11th century, possibly from Roman times. The "Iosif" chamber is so tall it has its own echo. The air is humid, salty, very clean — natural therapy for asthma, allergies, lungs. In fact many Romanians come weekly with their kids for this, not for tourism.

Tip: bring an extra layer, it's 11-12°C year-round underground. Stay at least 2-3 hours — there's a lot to explore, don't rush. Summer weekends are crowded — come early or try a weekday. Ticket: about €8-10 adult, kids reduced.

Turda is 30 km from Cluj. Pair with Turda Gorges (a beautiful natural park, 2-3 hour hike) or an evening in Cluj — Republica street has one of Romania's liveliest urban scenes.
