Mihai Eminescu Memorial House
The childhood home of Romania's national poet, in the village of Ipotești.

The Mihai Eminescu Memorial House in Ipotești is more than a museum. It's a seven-hectare complex in the village where Romania's national poet grew up — the pond, the church, the family home, a modern library, an open-air amphitheater. It's the kind of place where you walk slowly and listen.

Eminescu lived here between 1850 and 1858, a watershed childhood between the Pașcani Forests and Iezerul Lake. Many images in his work — the moon, the lake, the linden tree, the forest — come from here. The original house has been restored after the model of his father Gheorghe Eminovici's home. The "Holy Voivodes" Church, where all 11 children of the family were baptized, is 200 m away.

Tip: every June, the Eminescu Festival brings concerts, readings, workshops — free, outdoors. A good weekend to come. The rest of the year is quiet, especially afternoons. Closed Mondays.

From Ipotești, Botoșani town is 8 km away. The center has one of the best-preserved Great Synagogues in Moldavia. Vorona Monastery, 30 km away, is a perfect short stop.
