Mamaia

Romania's flagship Black Sea resort — 8 km of sand on a thin strip between sea and lake.

Mamaia
What it feels like

In peak summer it's a continuous beat — music from beach bars, gulls overhead, families in the surf, paragliders trailing banners over the water. Out of season the same beach goes utterly quiet, just wind and the sound of the sea. Both versions are real Mamaia.

Mamaia is the loudest, most crowded, most photographed slice of the Romanian seaside — and depending on what you want, that's either the appeal or the problem. The sand is genuinely good (fine, light gold), the water is shallow and warm, the resort layout is simple (one road, sea on one side, lake on the other), and the density of hotels, restaurants, clubs, and beach bars rivals anything in the eastern Mediterranean. Aqua Magic, on the southern end, is the largest water park on the coast. The cable car (Telegondola) gives you a moving overhead view of the whole strip. Off-season — May, late September, October — Mamaia turns into a long quiet beach with Lake Siutghiol on one side; some of the hotels stay open and the experience is completely different. Summer festivals (Neversea is the biggest) define July–August; if you don't want crowds, avoid these weekends.

Best time to visit

Late June through early September for the full beach experience. Mid-September is the local sweet spot — warm water, fewer crowds, lower prices. May and October give you the strip almost to yourself.

How to get there

Direct from Constanța North train station by tram (line 100) or bus. By car from Bucharest, A2 motorway then DN39, total about 250 km / 3 hours. The resort is car-accessible the whole length.

Giddo's tips

Northern Mamaia is quieter and more residential. Southern Mamaia (toward Constanța) has the densest nightlife. The cable car (Telegondola) is worth the price for the photo. Eat off-strip in Constanța for better food at half the price.

Good to know

Lifeguards are present in summer on most public beaches but not all. Be aware of jellyfish in late summer. Beach bars sell alcohol — keep an eye on belongings.
