Károlyi Castle in Carei

Károlyi Castle in Carei is a neo-Gothic palace, originally raised in the 15th century as a fortress, completely rebuilt between 1893-1896 in Tudor Revival style modeled after English castles. It was the main residence of the Károlyi family — one of the most influential Hungarian noble houses in Transylvania. Today a museum, after a major restoration completed in 2017.

Inside, elegant halls, Hungarian parquet, Murano chandeliers, period furniture. The permanent exhibit follows the family's and the city's history. Ballroom, library, chapel. Good photos in the mirror hall and the marble lobby.

The 11-hectare English park surrounding the castle — old trees, winding alleys, statues, the greenhouse (now a restaurant), a small lake. For wine lovers: an old cellar at the park's edge (Carei is an important wine region).

Tip: closed Mondays, open morning-afternoon the rest of the week. Ticket about €3. Combine with St. Andrew's Monastery (2 km away, Reformed) or Satu Mare town — a city center with reasonably preserved Secession architecture.
