Dervent Monastery
A serene Orthodox monastery with a healing spring above the Danube.

Dervent Monastery sits on a high bank above the Danube, 30 km from Călărași, near the Bulgarian border. It's one of Dobrogea's oldest Christian sites — tradition says St. Andrew preached here in the 1st century. The current monastery is newer, rebuilt in the 20th century after the communists closed it.

It's a place of pilgrimage. The spring water — considered healing — draws people daily who come for health, peace, a short prayer. Four stone healing crosses stand at the entrance; the faithful touch them and bow. The atmosphere is calm, simple, no tourist show.

Tip: respect the dress code (shoulders and knees covered to enter the church). Entry is free, donations welcome. Friday and Sunday morning services are beautiful to hear even if you're not Orthodox. No photos inside the church.

Combine with the Roman ruins of Dervent (1 km away, free entry), the Iezer-Călărași Reserve (a natural park with birds), or a break in Călărași — the town has a lovely old market square.
