Corvin Castle
One of Europe's largest Gothic castles, built in the 15th century.

Corvin Castle is one of Central Europe's largest and best-preserved Gothic castles. Built in the 15th century by John Hunyadi — the Hungarian military commander who stopped the Ottomans at Belgrade in 1456 — on the ruins of an older fortress. It sits on a cliff above Hunedoara town, connected to the mountain by a 30 m wooden bridge.

Inside: the Knights' Hall (most impressive, octagonal columns and Gothic vault), the Diet Hall, the Castle Chapel, the Nebóise Tower (main gate), the Treasury Tower, the spiral staircase. There's also an exhibit on Vlad the Impaler — who, according to legend (not history), was held prisoner here for a few months by Matthias Corvinus (John's son).

Tip: visit takes 1.5-2 hours. Come in the morning for photos — the light on the eastern facade is perfect. Ticket: about €7. Closed Mondays. Summer: crowded, come early. Winter castle with snow is dramatic — and less busy.

Combine with Sarmizegetusa Regia (Dacian capital, 50 km, UNESCO), Hațeg with Colț and Mălăiești castles, or Deva Fortress (20 km, panoramic view from the cable car).
