Brâncuși's Monumental Ensemble
Three iconic sculptures by Brâncuși: the Endless Column, Table of Silence, Gate of the Kiss.

The Brâncuși Ensemble in Târgu Jiu is one of the most important modern art works in the world — and it's a public sculpture, in a park, that you can touch. Inaugurated in 1938 as a memorial to WWI heroes, the ensemble has three monumental pieces along a 1.5 km axis: the Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss, the Endless Column.

The Table of Silence — a round stone table with 12 hourglass-shaped seats, symbolizing the soldiers' last supper before battle. The Gate of the Kiss — a thick travertine arch with motifs recalling an embrace. The Endless Column — 29.35 m, 17 rhomboid cast-iron modules, a spiral climbing toward the sky. Brâncuși said: "My Endless Column is my purest dream."

Tip: walk the axis as he designed it — from the Table of Silence to the Gate of the Kiss (along Heroes' Way), then cross town (10 minutes) to reach the Column. Take time, read a bit beforehand. Free, open 24/7. Best in the evening when the Column is lit.

Târgu Jiu also has the Gorj County Museum (Brâncuși maquettes, plus folk art), the Brâncuși Memorial House in Hobița (his birth village, 35 km), and the Jiu Gorge — superb landscapes toward the Vâlcan Mountains.
