Brâncoveni Monastery
A foundation of the Brâncoveanu family, one of Oltenia's oldest monasteries.

Brâncoveni Monastery is a foundation of the Brâncoveanu family — one of Oltenia's oldest. Founded in 1583 by Matei Basarab, radically rebuilt by Constantin Brâncoveanu between 1699 and 1704, exactly when he was building Mogoșoaia Palace too. The two places are architectural siblings — same Brâncovenesc style, same carved columns, same feeling.

The "Holy Voivodes" Church is the heart of the complex — original 1704 paintings, with portraits of the voivode and his family on the western wall. Constantin's martyrdom in Constantinople (1714) made this a pilgrimage site — many annual processions, especially on August 16, his commemoration day.

There's a small but very interesting museum — old manuscripts, icons, ritual objects from the Brâncovenesc period. Kept alive by a community of nuns (it's been a women's monastery since 1995).

Tip: free, donations welcome. 10 km from Slatina (a quiet town on the Olt), 30 km from Caracal with the Romanați Museum, 40 km from Cozia Monastery (in Vâlcea). A full day of monasteries and Oltenian villages.
