Bran Castle
The "Dracula" castle in the heart of Transylvania.
What it feels like
Stone-cold corridors, a labyrinth of stairs, narrow windows looking down on the village — half-castle, half-trap, exactly the way medieval defenders wanted it.
Built in 1388 to guard the mountain pass, Bran Castle now houses a fine collection of medieval furniture and weapons. Despite its Dracula fame, the connection to Bram Stoker's novel is loose — but the silhouette against the Bucegi mountains is unmistakable.
Best time to visit
Spring through autumn. Avoid weekends in summer if you dislike crowds.
How to get there
By car: 30 km from Brașov on DN73. Bus: regular line from Brașov bus terminal. Free parking at the base of the hill.
