Berca Mud Volcanoes

Bubbling cones of cold mud — a lunar landscape at the foot of the Carpathians.

Berca Mud Volcanoes

The Berca Mud Volcanoes look like another planet. Cracked earth, small 1-3 meter cones bubbling and slurping cold mud, dwarf silver vegetation, a faint smell of hydrocarbons. They're formed by natural gas rising from 3,000 m depth, pushing clay-water to the surface. It rains mud, slow and ritualistic.

There are two reserves: Pâclele Mari (busier, easy parking) and Pâclele Mici (wilder, dirt road). They're 6 km apart. Recommendation: see both if you have time — different textures. Small entry fee (about €1) or free at some entrances.

Practical tip: don't wear shoes you mind staining — the clay mud permanently colors. Don't step on the crust! It looks solid, but underneath is always wet mud. Best light is early morning or before sunset. Summer afternoons are brutally hot — no shade.

Nearby: the Buzău Salt Mountain (literally a mountain of salt), Ciolanu Monastery, and Colți village with real amber. A day or two in the Buzău Subcarpathians — landscapes you'll find nowhere else.
