Bears' Cave
A cave in the Apuseni Mountains housing 15,000-year-old cave bear skeletons.

The Bears' Cave in Chișcău is one of the few caves in the world where you can see complete cave bear skeletons, untouched for 15,000 years. They were discovered accidentally in 1975, when a miner set off a charge in a limestone gallery in the Apuseni Mountains. What opened up had not been seen by any living person.

The tour takes about 45 minutes. You walk 488 m of prepared path through three galleries (Bears, Emil Racoviță, Candles) and see stalactites, stalagmites, and — the highlight — a complete Ursus spelaeus skeleton in the exact position it died in, thousands of years ago. It's a breath-stopping moment.

Tip: bring a jacket, whatever the season. The cave is a constant 10°C and nearly 100% humidity — it feels like a fridge after 5 minutes. Tickets are sold at the entrance, but weekends bring serious queues in summer. Come early.

The area around the cave has small guesthouses and chalets. It's a good base for hikes to Cetățile Ponorului or Padiș Plateau. And yes, the Apuseni still have living bears — not just fossils.
