Bistrița (Bistritz în germană) a fost timp de secole un important centru comercial saxon. Strada Șirul de Case cu arcadele sale din sec.XV, pivnițele medievale și casele cu etaj sculptate fac din Bistrița unul dintre cele mai bine conservate orașe saxone din Nordul Transilvaniei, azi în curs de restaurare.
